Recently Challenger added the Rotax 582 65 HP liquid cooled engine to the optional power plants available. If flying on floats, from a short field or on a craft that is usually flown loaded the 582 would be the engine of choice. Lost Hill Aviation also offers an engine installation package for the HKS two cylinder four stroke engine. The HKS offers four stroke reliability, with a higher TBO, and less fuel consumption. The down side of the HKS is the lack of service and parts outlets. The Challenger uses an inverted Rotax engine installation and belt drive system. The early systems uses a 2 to 1 reduction drive ration spinning a 54 inch propeller. This was very noisy and inefficient. Today's Challengers use 2.5 to 1 reduction drive which spins a larger 60 inch propeller slower for better efficiency. For pilots wanting electric start Challenger offers a side mount GPL starter. The Challenger being a tri-cycle gear in a pusher configuration has excellent ground handling, via the steerable nose wheel. The control system uses dual rudder pedals, center mounted stick, and left hand throttles. A flaperon option is available. The standard fuel tank is mounted behind the rear seat. A number of suppliers offer long range tanks. |
