Three years ago Phoenix Powered Parachutes introduced the Phoenix Aero, which they proved was a Legal Part 103 ultralight, even when equipped with a Rotax 503, 50 HP engine.

To prove it they took the Aero and had it weighed on certified scales, with the certification affixed to the craft for all to see.

This year they introduced their newest design the Phoenix Tomahawk another Part 103 legal ultralight. The Tomahawk has been designed from the ground up to be an "affordable flyer."

The Tomahawk utilizes a single rail welded steel fuselage, which eliminates a lot of weight in nuts, bolts, and brackets, and weighs in at 225 lbs with engine.

Working closely with J Bird Enterprises of Wisconsin, Phoenix is now able to offer a complete 440 Kawasaki, 40 HP engine package for the Tomahawk. The Kawasaki comes  complete from J Bird with an air cooled fan, tuned exhaust, and Mikuni carburetor.

Phoenix reports that with over 40 hours of flying on it "that everything we have experienced with this engine package from J Bird is positive - including the price."

The package uses a 2.68 to 1 belt reduction drive. Phoenix has also taken "a bit of the old and mixed it with the new." Looking closely at the suspension system old Dactyl pilots might recognized the 1 inch fiberglass spring rod landing gear used on the Tomahawk.

Phoenix is also looking at offering the craft as a universal package that could take up to a Rotax 582 with an E drive for those not wanting to get involved in the Sport Pilot program but have a two place with a Rotax 582 on it.
