In order to stay the leader in any industry you have to continually improve, update, while being innovative. Since 2000 Powrachute Corporation has been a leader in the field of powered parachutes and currently has over 1,000 of their units flying world wide. Powrachute was one of the first manufacturers to provide: Frontal fuselage bars, for better pilot and passenger protection. An elevated frame and prop guard to help eliminate prop and guard damage. A steering bar used for ground handling, doubles as a tow bar. A one piece frame with hydraulic shock suspension. They were also one of the first powered parachute companies to introduce the Rotax 912 series into their line up, and have demonstrated powered parachutes with Harley Davidson motorcycle engines, and even a jet engine. In 2006 at Airventure Powrachute introduced their "Performance Plus Wing System." This system increases the payload of a standard 500 lbs. chute by 150 to 160 lbs. Or a pilot can opt to use a 400 lbs. chute and with the wing system have the same load capacity but have a more efficient chute that inflates easier. The use of a smaller chute also gives an increase in airspeed of 8 mph. According the the factory the glide ratio is also improved with the addition of the wing. The system demonstrated at the show adds a standard fixed wing weighing in at 19 lbs., onto the top of the main cage of the powered parachute. This gives the Powrachute an additional 18 square feet of lifting area. The factory plans to make the angle of attack adjustable so that a pilot can trim it out at higher airspeeds. The system is will also retrofitable to all Pegasus and Airwolf unit's in the field. The factory indicates that they are trying a number of different building processes for wing construction to compare strength, weight and cost. Another retrofitable feature introduced for the Powrachute series of aircraft this year is a molded lexan windshield designed by Jerry Peterson of Leisure Flights. The unit flips and locks up when the pilot wants to use the tow bar for pulling the plane. When he is ready to go flying it flips down and locks for flight. This offers pilots bug protection plus a more comfortable flight in colder seasons. Brad Underwood sales and marketing director of Steve's Para Sports introduced the first Powrachute to be equipped with the a Para Mast float system. The Para Mast system allow a powered parachute to fly off the water with floats. It holds the wing of a ppc out of the water by placing it on top of two poles attached to the ppc's cart. These poles or outriggers are able to move fore and aft. At rest the poles sit in a slight rearward incline position. As the craft picks up speed they move forward into the flying position that the chute would normally be in. The Para Mast system not including floats weighs in at 29 lbs. |
